Commuters will be hit by one of the biggest Christmas and New Year railroad closures and are expected to cut off some of Britain’s busiest airports.
According to reports, Network Rail plans to plan 330 projects between Christmas and New Year, an increase of more than 30% over last year. The upgrade of the aging system will affect the services of major lines, including the West Coast, Great Western, Greater East, Midland Main Line and major routes to Merseyside.
Network Rail defended these efforts, saying that the £148 million it spent during the Christmas season would provide passengers with more reliable and efficient services.
It added that Christmas is the best time to start a job because the number of passengers across the network is typically 50% lower than normal.
However, the Times reported last night that the scale of the work could be confusing for millions of travelers trying to reach out to friends and family.
Heathrow and Gatwick are the two busiest airports in the UK and will face significant reductions in rail travellers or during the Christmas holidays, while Heathrow’s new track will mean There will be no train between the airport and Paddington on December 23rd.

The Great Eastern Mains of Essex, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Norfolk will also work outside London’s Liverpool Street.
